Local hire
Cars are available locally from a number of Hire Companies at local prices.
We recommend a company called EuroAlfa, they are a small family owned and run business providing an excellent service. Vehicles can be delivered and collected from the apartments or even the airport. Comments etc. can be viewed on www.zanteweb.gr/car_rentals/euroalfa/index.html. All of their vehicles are less than 3 years old and are in excellent condition. They are FULLY insured - no excesses etc. to pay in the event of a claim.
We do not advise the hire of motorbikes or quad bikes but they are available locally.
Driving in Greece
A full driving license is required (international not necessary), carry your passport with you as well.
The speed limits are 70 km/hr on the country roads, 50 km/hr in towns and villages. European seat belt laws apply in Zakynthos.
Officially you must drive on the right hand side of the road, however, the locals tend to drive in the middle of the road in the hope that you will give way! Pedestrians engrossed in the views, donkeys and goats are often found on the road so please be prepared to stop/move over quickly.
The road surfaces in general are not bad but some country roads are little more than dirt tracks.
There are many petrol stations in Zakynthos Town and several others in the surrounding area. Most petrol stations stay open all hours.
Greeks who give directions are often wrong!
